Planning a trip to Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur is one of Southeast Asia's best-value cities: excellent food from many cuisines, an affordable rail network and a wide range of hotels. Heat and humidity shape the day, so most visitors plan around indoor breaks in malls and museums.
Best time to go
It is warm and humid year round with frequent afternoon showers. June to August is generally the driest period, while the wettest months are usually in the autumn and early winter. Holidays such as Hari Raya and Chinese New Year bring crowds and higher prices, so check dates.
Where to stay
Bukit Bintang is the lively center for shopping and food. KLCC is near the Petronas Towers and the pricier hotels. Chinatown and Bukit Bintang have good-value hostels and hotels. Be sure your hotel is near an LRT, MRT or monorail station.
Getting around
The LRT, MRT and monorail cover the center, and a Touch 'n Go card or a compatible payment option makes riding simple. Ride apps such as Grab are cheap and avoid fare haggling. Footpaths can be uneven and covered walkways incomplete, so plan short walks.
How to spend less
- Eat at street stalls on Jalan Alor and local food courts, where meals are very cheap.
- Visit free sights, such as Batu Caves (dress modestly) and the KLCC park and fountain show.
- Use malls for cool places to rest and for cheaper food courts.
- Book Petronas Towers skybridge tickets ahead when you can, as popular times sell out.
Common mistakes
Trying to walk everywhere in the heat. Mix rail rides and short walks, carry water and plan outdoor activities for the morning.
