How to convert units
Choose a category, type your value, then pick the unit you have and the unit you want. The result updates as you type. Every unit is defined by an exact value in a base unit, so a conversion is one multiplication and one division.
result = value × (from-unit factor ÷ to-unit factor)
- 1 in = 2.54 cm
- 1 mi = 1.609344 km
- 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg
Example: 5 mi to km: 5 × 1,609.344 m ÷ 1,000 m = 8.04672 km.
Temperature is the exception. The scales start at different points, so it needs an offset as well as a multiplication: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
Formulas worth remembering
Know a few of these and you can sanity-check any result.
km → mi: × 0.621371 mi → km: × 1.609344
kg → lb: × 2.20462 lb → kg: × 0.453592
°C → °F: × 9/5 + 32 °F → °C: (°F − 32) × 5/9
L → US gal: × 0.264172 US gal → L: × 3.785412
cm → in: ÷ 2.54 m → ft: × 3.28084
- Miles to km: multiply by 1.6.
- kg to lb: double it and add 10 percent.
- °C to °F: double it and add 30 for a rough answer.
Examples for travelers
Road signs, baggage limits, forecasts and recipes, converted exactly.
- 65 mph = 104.607 km/h
- 3 mi = 4.82803 km
- 23 kg = 50.7063 lb
- 50 lb = 22.6796 kg
- 86 °F = 30 °C
- 12 US fl oz = 354.882 mL
- A US speed limit of 65 means 65 miles per hour.
- Body temperature of 98.6 °F is 37 °C, and a comfortable 68 °F room is 20 °C.
Example: A 50 lb baggage limit is 50 × 0.45359237 = 22.68 kg, so check which unit your airline uses before you pack.
Metric vs imperial
Nearly every country uses the metric system. The United States uses US customary units, and the United Kingdom mixes both: miles and mph on the road, metric on most packaging, and stones and pounds for body weight. Aviation uses knots and feet worldwide.
- 1 US gal = 3.78541 L
- 1 UK gal = 4.54609 L
- 1 US ton = 907.185 kg
- 1 UK long ton = 1,016.05 kg
- 1 metric tonne = 1,000 kg
The UK gallon is about 20 percent larger than the US gallon, so fuel economy figures are not interchangeable. This tool offers both in Volume, and the word ton can mean three different weights.
Accuracy and rounding
The conversion factors are exact definitions, so the maths is exact; only the display is rounded. Auto shows up to eight significant digits, and the Precision control fixes the number of decimals from 0 to 6.
Round at the end, to the precision of your original measurement
- Do not round in the middle of a calculation; convert first, then round once.
- Mach is approximate: this tool uses the speed of sound at sea level in a standard atmosphere (about 1,225 km/h), and the real value changes with temperature.
Example: A trail of “about 5 miles” is 8.04672 km, but 8 km says everything the original did.
