Planning a trip to Colombo
Colombo is Sri Lanka's commercial capital and a low-cost city by international standards. Local meals, tuk-tuks and trains cost very little, while air-conditioned hotels and imported goods cost more. Most visitors pass through on the way to the beaches, hills and ancient cities, so many trips combine Colombo with other stops.
Best time to go
Colombo is warm and humid throughout the year, with rain possible in any month. The west and south coast are generally best from about December to March. The southwest monsoon brings heavier rain roughly from May to September. Check the season for each region you plan to visit.
Where to stay
Colombo 3 (Kollupitiya) and Colombo 7 (Cinnamon Gardens) are central, safe and convenient for restaurants. Fort and Pettah are busy commercial areas near the main railway station. Guesthouses are good value and often include breakfast.
Getting around
Use ride apps such as PickMe or Uber for tuk-tuks and cars, so the price is fixed up front. Trains to Galle, Kandy and beyond are scenic and cheap; book reserved seats on popular routes in advance. Traffic can be heavy, so allow extra time.
How to spend less
- Eat rice and curry at local eateries, which is filling and inexpensive.
- Buy a local SIM at the airport for cheap data and ride apps.
- Choose trains and buses for intercity travel instead of private drivers when you do not need flexibility.
- Walk Galle Face Green and visit temples and markets, which cost little or nothing.
Common mistakes
Not checking entry rules in advance. Most visitors need an electronic travel authorization, so apply through the official government site and not a third-party service that adds fees. Dress modestly and remove shoes and hats at temples.
